Overview
This 6-day cultural immersion retreat invites you to experience the living spirit of rural Japan — not as a tourist, but as part of the community.
You will stay in a traditional onsen ryokan, practice gentle yoga and meditation, play taiko drums, visit shrines and temples, and most importantly, participate in a real local Matsuri festival alongside residents.
This is not a sightseeing tour or a typical yoga retreat.
It is an inside experience of Japanese life, rhythm, and connection.

FAQ
Q. Are solo travelers welcome? Is it safe to join alone?
Yes, absolutely.
Most participants join solo, and this retreat naturally creates a warm and supportive group atmosphere. You will quickly make friends through shared experiences like festival participation, meals, and practice sessions. Japan is also known as one of the safest countries in the world.
Q. How many people will join the retreat?
The retreat runs with a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 participants.
We keep the group small to ensure a personal, intimate, and community-based experience.
Q. Do I need yoga or meditation experience?
No experience is required.
All sessions are beginner-friendly and optional. Yoga, breathwork, and meditation are gentle and accessible, designed to support your body and mind — not as intensive training.
Q. Do I have to join every activity?
Participation is always optional.
However, this retreat is designed around experiencing the local Matsuri (festival) culture together. Even if you choose not to carry the Mikoshi shrine, we encourage everyone to take part in the festival spirit in their own way — as a participant rather than just a spectator.
Q. What kind of accommodation is provided?
You will stay at a traditional Japanese onsen ryokan.
Rooms are shared (3 people per room) with tatami flooring and futon bedding, offering an authentic Japanese-style stay. The inn also features natural hot spring baths (onsen), enjoyed by both retreat guests and regular visitors.
Private room upgrades with Western-style beds are available for an additional fee.
Q. What is the onsen like?
The inn has multiple natural hot spring baths with alkaline mineral water, often called “beauty baths” in Japan.
They are known to help relax muscles, improve circulation, and soothe fatigue.
Please note that the baths are shared with other guests and are not private.
Q. What kind of food is served?
Meals are authentic home-style Japanese cuisine with many small seasonal dishes made from local ingredients. Breakfast and dinner are included daily.
We can usually adjust for light preferences or allergies.
Vegetarian meals may be arranged with advance notice, but please understand that:
-
Traditional Japanese food often uses fish-based broth (dashi)
-
Fully vegan or strict vegetarian meals are difficult in rural areas
-
Options may be simpler or limited
-
Special requests may incur additional costs
Please contact us before booking if you have dietary needs.
Q. Can allergies be accommodated?
Yes. Food allergies can usually be accommodated with advance notice. Please inform us at the time of booking.
Q. What should I bring?
We recommend:
-
Comfortable clothes and walking shoes
-
Light layers (mornings/evenings can be cool)
-
5–6 days of clothing (summer heat may require changes)
-
Sunscreen and insect repellent
-
Small daypack
-
Earplugs or eye mask for shared rooms
-
Personal toiletries
Laundry facilities are available at the inn.
Q. Do I need travel insurance?
Yes.
All participants are required to arrange their own travel insurance covering medical care, accidents, and trip cancellation.
Q. Can you arrange airport transfers?
We do not provide airport transfers, but we are happy to advise you on the best routes and timing.
Please note that traveling from Tokyo on the same day may be tight due to the distance. Arriving one day earlier is often more comfortable.
Q. What is the closest international airport?
The most convenient international gateways are Tokyo (Haneda or Narita) and Nagoya (Chubu Centrair).
From there, you can reach Iida by train or highway bus.
Q. How do I get there by bus?
Direct highway buses run from Shinjuku (Tokyo) to Iida Station, taking approximately 4 hours. This is one of the easiest and most affordable options.
Q. How do I get there by car?
You can reach Iida by car in about:
-
3.5–4 hours from Tokyo
-
2–2.5 hours from Nagoya
Parking is available at the inn.
Q. What is the average age range of participants?
Past retreats have welcomed guests from their late 20s to 70s.
Most participants are adults in their 40s–60s who are interested in culture, nature, and meaningful travel.
Q. Is this a yoga retreat?
Not exactly.
Yoga and breathwork are included as supportive practices, but the heart of this retreat is cultural immersion — participating in a real Japanese festival, connecting with local people, Taiko drumming, onsen, shrines, and community life.
Think of it as a cultural and spiritual journey rather than a fitness-focused retreat.
Q. Can I arrive late or leave early?
Yes, but please note that the full retreat fee still applies and refunds are not available for partial attendance.
Q. What if the festival is cancelled due to weather?
August can be hot and occasionally rainy.
While the festival usually takes place as planned, weather or local conditions may cause schedule adjustments. In such cases, alternative cultural activities will be arranged.
Q. How is this retreat different from others?
This retreat is guided entirely by Japanese hosts deeply rooted in the local community.
Rather than staging a “cultural experience,” you are welcomed into real local life — joining an authentic Matsuri, learning directly from traditional performers, and sharing everyday moments with residents.
It is Japan from the inside, not from the outside.
Q. How are onsen and accommodation arranged?
The retreat takes place in Japan and follows traditional Japanese accommodation and gender-separated onsen bathing practices.
Shared rooms and bathing facilities are arranged according to these traditional structures.
If you have specific questions or concerns regarding accommodation or onsen participation, please contact us prior to applying.
